Economic & Stock Market Outlook 2011

Investing in bonds and equities is a good way to ensure our money works hard for us as we plan for our future. The important question then is, “Which stocks and bonds to invest in?” Twenty Ten (2010) has been a good year for most investors. “Will 2011 be a winning year for your investments?” Sixty (60) AAS members and friends invested their Saturday morning, on 8 January 2011 to find out. Jointly conceptualized by AAS and Phillip Securities, the first AAS event for the year was held at Phillip Securities, Raffles City Tower.

The event was opened by Mr Loh Hoon Sun, Managing Director of Phillip Securities and President of AAS, with a short welcome speech. Presentations catered to a wide range of investment appetites.

Mr Joshua Tan, Strategist at Phillip Securuties Research, started the ball rolling with his view on the Macro and Stock Market Outlook for 2011. He predicted that the STI would reach 3,650 by the end of this year.

The second speaker, Mr Derrick Heng, Investment Analyst at Phillip Securities Research, generously shared his exciting stock picks of fast growing Singapore companies. He included the price at which to buy and the research into the catalysts and risks behind each recommendation. It was a clear list of companies for which growth was forecast to be profitable for potential investors.

Ms Hilary Ho and Ms Josephine Phoon of Phillip Securities Unit Trusts, presented the structure and benefits of unit trusts. It was clear that novice and risk adverse investors would find this financial instrument very helpful. Hilary also shared that buying into a unit trust portfolio using CPF funds has been profitable for investors. She added that although the returns from unit trusts do not often compare with returns from single equities, they do provide comparatively decent returns when adjusted for risk.
