Message from His Excellency Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam
President of the Republic of Singapore
Patron of the Australian Alumni Singapore

I am happy to continue as a Patron of the Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS). In my previous message, I reiterated that beyond merely building good political and economic links, people-to-people links are equally important and that Asian students who have studied in Australian universities are some of the strongest links between Asia and Australia. The network of contacts and friendships that AAS has forged has strengthened this strong people-to-people bond adding real substance to the relationship between our peoples and countries.

I am pleased to note the commitment of the Management Committee in reaching out and  fostering a closer relationship with the Australian High Commission, and the positive reciprocal support from the Australian High Commissioner, who is the other Patron of AAS.

In the last two years, I observed that AAS has attracted more members including institution members, as well as actively engaged its members through regular events and activities with participation from other alumni associations.

This augurs well for AAS and I urge you, members, to do your part for, and be a part of, the Australian Alumni Singapore.

Message from His Excellency Mr Philip Green
Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, and
Patron of Australian Alumni Singapore

I am very pleased to take on the role of Co-Patron of the Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS). The very large and growing Australian alumni network of more than 100,000 Singaporeans is an enduring reminder of Australia’s deep interest and commitment to Singapore and Asia more broadly.

Australia led the development of the Colombo Plan, offering scholarships whose recipients included a significant number of emerging Asian leaders, bringing some 20,000 students from Asia to study in Australia over 35 years. Australia continues to host hundreds of thousands of international students from around the world but particularly from Asia every year, and this continues to deepen the educational, cultural and business awareness of and engagement with Asia at all levels of Australian society.

Both Australia and Singapore understand that our greatest responsibility is to invest in our people through skills and education to drive our productivity and performance as nations. The long-standing history of our education links has been one of the key factors in the maturity of the bilateral relationship between our two nations today. There are great relationships between our leaders and our senior ministers and long-lasting people to people ties established across all  levels of our societies. There is a thriving trading relationship and a defence relationship of unparalleled closeness in the region.

I am grateful for the important role AAS plays in contributing to nurture these relationships and I encourage you to stay connected through these networks of Australian Alumni in Singapore.

Philip Green
Australian High Commissioner to Singapore

President’s Message 2016

Dear all,

I set the following Vision 2016 for AAS when I assumed the role of President at end March 2014:

    • To be a leading alumni association in Singapore with over 5,000 members
    • To be a strong facilitator to members in professional and business networking
    • To be a key promoter and supporter of Australian education to Singaporeans and Singaporean education to Australians

In 2015, our membership grew by 36% from 1,100 to 1,500. It will be highly challenging to reach 5,000 by end of this year. However, considering there are 130,000 Australian Alumni in Singapore, over time, if we continue to improve the association and implement vital strategic initiatives, I am sure we will get there and beyond.

The two key highlights for the year were:

    • The Inaugural AAS Australian University Graduate Homecoming Celebration on 22 September, held at the Australian High Commission. It was the first large scale event involving the returning graduates from all the Australian universities. The Governor-General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, graced the event as our Guest-of-Honour. The event was supported by 33 Australian universities and 29 employers and exhibitors. It attracted a total of 630 participants.
    • AAS 60th Anniversary Annual Dinner and Dance held at The Shangri-La Hotel Singapore on 7 November, which attracted 670 guests including Guest of Honour His Excellency Mr Philip Green, High Commissioner of Australia to Singapore, Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Senior Minister of State for Defence of Singapore, Her Excellency Ms Hazel Ngubeni, High Commissioner of South Africa to Singapore, Her Excellency Ms Yael Rubinstein, Ambassador of Israel to Singapore,  His Excellency Mr Tumur Lkhagvadorj Ambassador of Mongolia to Singapore, His Excellency Mr Cheth Naren, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Singapore, Mr Mah Bow Tan former Minister of Singapore

Over the last two years, we have implemented strategic initiatives including the following:

    • Outsourced our secretariat to an association management company
    • Raised sponsorship to support operating costs
    • Embarked on a membership drive
    • Established ongoing engagement and partnership with Australian Alumni Associations in Singapore
    • Strengthening collaboration with The Australian High Commission, The Australian Chamber of Commerce, The Australian and New Zealand Association and The Australian Universities

Going forward, we wish to deliver two more strategic initiatives:

    • Establish a Partner University Scheme with selected universities, which will provide among other benefits, all their alumni in Singapore to join AAS for free. James Cook University JCU Singapore is leading the charge on this front and has agreed to be our first Partner University
    • Set up a Council of Advisors (“Council”). This Council, which will be made up of highly regarded and successful Australian alumni, will provide guidance and support to the Management Committee to chart a long term, successful and sustainable AAS

I wish to take this opportunity to thank our Term Sponsors, in particular our Platinum Sponsor National Australia Bank, our Gold Sponsors Westpac and Lend Lease, Silver Sponsors Far East Organization, Helping Hand Group, Ocean Master Engineering, Hui & Kuah, Jetstar, Crown Group, The University of Newcastle and TrustCapital, Quartz Sponsors Eastern Carpets and Ngee Ann Adelaide Education Centre. Qantas has also come on board as our Official Airline.

This year, in conjunction with our Diamond Jubilee, James Cook University JCU Singapore have stepped up to contribute as our very special Diamond Sponsor. Thank you very much JCU Singapore.

I wish to also thank High Commissioner Philip and his fantastic team and our Management Committee for the excellent support so far.

Finally, my very special thanks to our Secretariat, June Tan, Gabriel Lim and team from Intellitrain who have done a tremendous job over the last two years to help bring AAS to where we are today. I am sad to share that they have decided to leave us on their own accord.

Gea Ban Peng and his team at*Link Management Consultants (“LMC”) have taken up the challenge to be our new Secretariat and join our journey for the next lap. LMC are the long serving Secretariat for Hong Kong Singapore Business Association and Singapore Trustees Association. I am confident we are in good hands.

Best Regards,
Christopher Cheah
President, Australian Alumni Singapore
